Program History – STEM & The Supply Chain

In 2011, Cheryl Dalsin, then a technical program manager at Intel’s supply chain group, witnessed firsthand how the lack of STEM and supply chain education among students contributed to this supply chain gap. In an effort to educate her daughter’s elementary school class on STEM concepts, Dalsin created an interactive and exciting lemonade activity to introduce students to the basic plan, source, make, deliver and return components of supply chain management.

Dalsin partnered with other supply chain professionals - Jim Rice (MIT-CTL), Judy Whipple (Michigan State University), John Fowler (Arizona State University), and a small team from Intel - to create and pilot additional supply chain STEM activities to over 600 students in the Phoenix area.  Demand for the program started to skyrocket, and the volunteer spark for Supply Chain was ignited.

Throughout the next 5 years, Dalsin and her partners continued to grow the STEM program internationally, eventually reaching over 15,000 students. Several games and activities were developed to effectively target and reach different age groups.

In early 2016, Dalsin was hired by APICS to lead the program full time and the Supply Chain-STEM Educational Outreach Program was born.

APICS is a proud winner of the 2017 ASAE Power of A Gold Award for the Supply Chain STEM Outreach program! ASAE created the Power of A Awards to showcase how associations leverage their unique resources to solve problems, advance industry/professional performance, kickstart innovation and improve world conditions. Associations are involved in activities every day that make a substantial, positive impact on our lives.
